Growth Mindset:

9/10/2017

The principal idea of a person with a growth mindset is that he/she believes that intelligence and other qualities are not fixed traits but in fact something that they can improve. There are also people who have fixed mindsets who believe that intelligence is determined ever since birth and they can only have fixed qualities, none of which they can change.  In the article, “The Effort Effect” written by Marina Krakovsky, it is stated that “Failure is information-we label it failure, but it’s more like, ’This didn’t work, I'm a problem solver, and I’ll try something else’” (10). If a person with a growth mindset makes a mistake, they don’t believe that they are a failure but instead believe think that they just made an error and that they should try harder to find the correct solution.  According to Marina, “British soccer culture held that soccer players are born, not made” (2). For people who have fixed mindsets, their ideology is that they are born with skills, which they are limited to and cannot enhance. According to a video made by RSA, it declares the following, “In my work we find that some students have a fixed mindset about their intellectual abilities and talents. They think that intelligence is just a fixed trait. You have a certain amount and that’s that.” (0.14-0.28). However, in reality, you have the ability to develop your intelligence and to develop your mindset no matter what you may think. By overcoming challenges, you can improve your abilities or talents.  This is how many famous people became who they are today, as they faced challenges and overcame their fears. There is a paradox that someone might believe that they are so talented at a certain ability that they don’t want to train anymore because they are so good.  In conclusion, a growth mindset makes people able to achieve greater heights, as they learn from their mistakes and are not afraid to do a challenges.

The Artifact
Our artifact represents a super strong guy easily carrying weights, not willing to improve. It will be a drawing of a guy that goes to the gym to show off his muscles because he is so buff.  He will not choose to lift heavier weights because he is so buff and that he thinks that he does not need to lift weights to improve anymore.  It connects with the essential idea because it is showing how people with fixed mindsets such as him act.  It displays a paradox because the super strong guys self consciously thinks that he is so strong that he does not need to lift weights anymore, yet he could still improve to be able to  lift even heavier weights. Another example of paradox is a student in a classroom not needing to study for a test. He thinks that he is too smart to study.  A soccer player might not want to go to practice because he may believe that he is too good at soccer so therefore,  he doesn’t need  to practice. Our artifact is significant because it reveals what happens when you think that you have no more room to improve.

Growth Mindset Reflection:

While I was working on the growth mindset project I learned that people with the growth mindset can learn and achieve higher than those with a fixed mindset.  I learned how to have a growth mindset.  In order to have a growth mindset you have to believe in yourself and when you fail try again.  I found out that I used to have a fixed mindset because in the guitar I wouldn't like taking challenges and learning new songs but now I have a growth mindset.  When I work with others i tend to work better when I’m alone because when I’m alone I usually get off task.  Yes, i learned critical thinking by going outside the box and finding information that critical thinking could only find.

"The Crucible" End of the Play F.I.N.D. Reflection
F - FACT - One fact about "The Crucible" is that the main antagonist of the play was Abigail Williams and the main protagonist of the play was John Proctor.
I - INTERNAL CONNECTION - While reading "The Crucible," I felt that it was very unfair that Abigail basically had all the power to manipulate others to accuse people into thinking other people are witches. Just by saying a name Abigail could ruin someones life.
N - NEW IDEA - A new idea that I learned when reading "The Crucible" is that back then even if you hugged another person other than your loved one it w0uld be a big thing and an affair.
D - DECISION - A mental decision that I will make based on my reading and understanding of "The Crucible" is that I will try to read more plays or books like this because I liked reading "The Crucible".

October Reflection

This year I am doing very good at reaching my goals. I feel like I am getting better at writing essays and over these past few weeks I have gotten better at math. I haven't really read more books this year but I am working on it. So far I have read one book and I am going to start on a new one. As the participation goes I say that I have made a huge improvement. I went from not participating at all in class to participating once a week. Some strengths that I have are making essays beacuse I have gotten better at them and some of my weaknesses are reading because I need to read more. I don't think im the worst writer or the best writer I see myself as in the middle. Something challenging is reading because I do n0t like reading and something easy are essays because Mrs. Park has helped me make them easy. This month I still want to work on my essays because I still want to get better at them.
Freedom + Conflict Reflection
When freedom is practiced a lot, it can be bad because it can lead into conflict. For example, the first amendment says that we have the freedom to protest, but once it become violent, it creates a problem (conflict) between the protesters and other forces. The first amendment also says that we have a freedom of religion. We can choose to exercise whatever religion we decide, but if the religion says to sacrfice animals, humans, or any other illegal stuff, it creates conflict. This conflict would be between the people who exercise this releigion and the people who think their religion is bad.
What does it mean to be American? What is the American dream?
If you are an American, everyone is treated equally. Whether their ethnicity is different or religion is different, everyone in America is given the same rights and treated equally. If you are American, you have to be willing to serve your country, even if it is risking your life. The American Dream is the idea that every single person can achieve success if they work hard enough. In order to achieve success, you need to have determination. The American Dream is like a form of freedom, so hard work and determination will give you freedom. If you really want something in life, hard work and determination will give it to you. The American Dream is basically made up of hard work and determination.
Poem Emulation
The Antwan Speaks of The Gym
Antwan Osorio
I’ve known gyms:
I’ve known gyms ancient as the world and older than the
Flow of human blood in human veins.
My soul has grown deep like the gyms.
I bathe in the locker room when dawns were young.
I ran on the treadmill as fast at a cheetah.
I looked upon the people and lifted my weights.
I heard the grunting of my peers when they try
    To outdo me.
I’ve known gyms:
Ancient, dusty gyms.
My soul has grown deep like the gyms.
